Love confirmed Ryder Cup skip

Medinah - Davis Love has been named captain of the 2012 United States Ryder Cup golf team on Thursday by the PGA of America, launching the American quest to win back the trophy from Europe next year.

Love, who won his only major title at the 1997 PGA Championship, played on six U.S. Ryder Cup teams, going 9-12 with five halves, and was a vice-captain on the American side that lost to Europe last October in Wales.

"The number one mission is to get the Cup back," Love said.

The 38th Ryder Cup will be staged September 28-30 at Medinah Country Club in suburban Chicago.

"I don't think we could ask for a greater home-field advantage than Medinah and Chicago," Love said.

The announcement came two days after the European Tour players committee voted Jose Maria Olazabal, a 44-year-old Spaniard and two-time Masters winner, as captain of the European squad that will make the trip to Chicago.

"I'm thrilled and honoured," Love said. "It's one of the great honours in golf to make one Ryder Cup team. To make it for a career is a blessing."

Love, 46, played for two US Cup-winning squads, in 1993 and 1999. He made his Ryder Cup debut in 1993 by joining Tom Kite for a 2-and-1 victory over Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros.

A 20-time winner on the US PGA Tour, Love's most recent triumph came in 2008 at the Children's Miracle Network Classic.
