Johannesburg - Louis Oosthuizen and Tim Clark both produced top finishes, ending tied for fifth and 10th respectively at The Barclays PGA Tour event in New York on Sunday.

The tournament was the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events.

Oosthiuzen fired a final round one-under 70 to end on five under for the week, five strokes adrift of American Nick Watney who claimed a three-shot victory.

For Oosthuizen's efforts he pocketed $281 000 (R2.4 million).

Clark dropped three shots in his final five holes to end with a one-over 72, signing for a three-under total for the event and allowing Oosthuizen to move ahead on the leaderboard.

However, it was Clark's third round that stood out. His four-under 67 included eight birdies and an eight-hole stretch without a par -- with six birdies, one bogey and a double bogey -- from the fourth hole.

For his week's work, Clark earned $160 888 (R1.4 million).

Meanwhile, Charl Schwartzel finished in a tie for 21st place, and further behind in a share for 54th was British Open champion Ernie Els who started the week well with a three-under 68 but struggled at the weekend, dropping to three over for the tournament.

Trevor Immelman ended tied for 67th on seven over, despite firing a second-round five-under 66.

Oosthuizen now lies 21st in the FedEx cup standings, three behind compatriot Els.

Clark, meanwhile, moves up 19 spots to 35th in the standings.

Coming off a second place finish last week behind Spaniard Sergio Garcia, Clark will hope to hold his form and dip into the top 30, making himself eligible for the lucrative fourth and final playoff event -- the Tour Championship.

His recent performances have also seen Clark rise 79 spots in the world golf rankings in the last two weeks, climbing 19 positions to 71st in the latest rankings list released on Monday.

The FedEx Cup uses a season-long points list, rewarding players for good performances both in regular season events and bigger tournaments like Majors, and the most points are awarded during playoff events.

The playoffs consist of four tournaments, with the fields reduced each week according to the points standings.
