Joburg Open Round 1 over

Johannesburg - The first round of the €1.3 million Joburg Open was completed on Friday morning after dangerous weather forced a delay in play on Thursday afternoon.

Damien McGrane and Jamie Elson shared the first round lead after shooting eight-under-par 63 on the par 71 West course of Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

While Reinier Saxton, Peter Karmis, Craig Lee and Scott Pinckney shot solid rounds of 64 on the West course for their share of third, it was Desvonde Botes and Robert Rock who shone on the tougher, par 72 East course to join the six-way tie for third after both players shot seven-under-par 65.

Seven players shared ninth after the first 18, all of whom played on the West course, exposing the difference in difficulty level between Royal Johannesburg’s two courses.

McGrane clocked up seven birdies before chipping in for eagle at the 15th. A drop at the 18th would mark the only blemish to an otherwise flawless round for the Irishman.

Jamie Elson leapt into contention by carding birdies through the first four, but drops at the 10th and 11th slowed the Englishman. He kept his head down and went on to card a further four birdies before signing for 63.
Defending champion Charl Schwartzel plodded around in 72 after struggling to sink putts.
