Atlanta - Late-season specialist David Toms had a one-shot lead over fellow American Joe Durant after the second round of the McGladrey Classic at St. Simon's Island in Georgia on Friday.
Two other Americans, Rich Barcelo and Heath Slocum, are tied for third at eight-under-par 132, while the highest placed foreign player is Sweden's Mathias Gronberg who is tied for fifth at seven-under with Brian Gay.
Louisiana native Toms, looking for his first top 10 finish of the season and his first win since 2006, is something of a specialist in winning in the South towards the end of the season.
"I've always played pretty well in the South, whether it has been on Bermuda grass or whatever. If you look back at my career that is the way that it has gone. Here we are again and it is going pretty well," said the 12-time Tour winner.
Toms followed up a first round 64 with his four-under round on Friday - he produced two birdies on the front and then four on the back but he bogeyed the 10th and the 14th - and put that down to being too adventurous.
"The two times when I got too aggressive I paid the price and made two bogeys - it was similar on Thursday, that is the type of course it is - you have to pick and choose where to attack," he said.
A number of international players failed to make the cut, including 2008 U.S. Masters winner Trevor Immelman of South Africa, Britain's Brian Davis and Greg Owen, German Alex Cejka, Japan's Ryuji Imadaand and Australian Nathan Green.
