Goosen rues close shave

East London - Retief Goosen cut off his ‘lucky’ beard on Thursday morning, but it did him no favours as he struggled to a 75 in the first round of the Africa Open.

The tournament’s top-ranked played was two over par at the end of a troubled morning round in which he made no less than five bogeys. Three of those dropped shots came on some of the shortest par-fours on the course.

The world number 14 sported some rare facial hair earlier in the week, and joked with reporters that it was because he was still on holiday. He added that the beard was his lucky charm.

This morning, however, the beard was gone as Retief began his first working day of the year. But the South African’s game did not seem to have come out of holiday mode, and Goosen was in no mood for joking afterwards. His post-round comments were limited to one sentence, little of which was fit for publication.
