Cape Town - Retief Goosen's tie for 16th place at the US Open was the best finish in an otherwise forgettable tournament for South Africa's golfers.

All told, seven South Africans teed off last Thursday in the 109th US Open at Bethpage Black outside New York.

The biggest disappointment was the performance of two-time US Open winner and highest ranked SA golfer (19), Ernie Els, who carded rounds of 78 and 77 to finish in a tie for 147th on 15-over-par and miss the cut by a staggering 11 strokes.

Charl Schwartzel, 64th in the latest ranking, posted rounds of 77 and 70 to finish on seven-over-par, three strokes outside the cut-line.

James 'Cobra' Kamte performed well in his first US Open, firing rounds of 74 and 72 to miss the cut by two strokes while Rory Sabbatini was left kicking himself after a late bogey in round two saw him miss the cut by a single stroke after signing for 72 and 73.

Fairing somewhat better - and pleasing their bank managers - were Andrew McLardy who finished in a tie for 54th and banked $22 501 (R185 000) and Tim Clark, now up to 29th in the world, who posted rounds of 73, 71, 74, 71 which was good enough for a tie for 40th and $38 492 (R316 000)

Goosen, himself a two-time US Open victor, threatened the leaders with middle rounds of 68, but an opening 73 and a closing 74 put pay to his chances. The smooth-swinging Polokwane-born star will have to console himself with $122 128 (R1m) in earnings...

US Open winner American Lucas Glover banked a cool $1.35m (R11m) and jumped into the Top 20 - into 18th spot - for the first time.

Runners-up Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes all cashed $559 830 (R4.6m) with Mickelson remaining No 2 in the world, Duval jumping from 882nd to 142nd and Barnes now ranked 153rd after his strong showing.

It seems that a couple of "writers" here have very short memories. With 15 PGA wins, 3 Majors and plenty of European & world wide wins Ernie will be rated as one of the best golfers in the world. There are many Tour players out there whose track record doesn't even come close to his. When you look at rating a Tour Pro look at what he has achieved in his career.

Hey some of you guys, give Ernie a break and plenty of space to get it all back together again, which he will do. No one plays this game to purposefully have a poor round, let alone two in a row. Just because you can afford a DSTV subscription, doesn't make you an expert on all sporting matters. Sit back, appreciate and enjoy the fantastic technology that let's us experience real live action, often from many thousands of kms away. Have respect for all those that are trying their very best. If you can't do that relatively simple thing, just change channels and watch cartoons, or turn off your TV & go and be a pain somewhere else..

It was the most boring US open i have ever watched .... the rain delays really didn't help either but maybe thats just me and not having a SA golfer near the top to add interest ???Nice to see the goose not falling apart , hopefully a change in form for him Well done Glover.!!!

Ernie k@k these days. He just hasn't got the hunger anymore. I don't bame him, he has all the money in the world and a 1000 off course interests. I don't see him ever winning in the US again or any major tournament. He should stick to the Sunshine tour. So much for his 2 year plan to geT back to number 1!!!

Call me the best of a sorry bunch. With $122 128 earned in just four days, I'll gladly take in on the chin.

@D myster. Suppose you can do better twit? He's not no 19 in the world for nothing. You wish you can even play 1 thousands as good as him. Clearly you know nothing of golf as Ernie is not even 40 years of age and he still has another 10 years before even thinking of going onto the senior tour. But nooooo every time he enters he is expected to win....Geez man if that was the case there would be no Tiger Woods!!!

Ernie Els drinking is back fired again...

I have said this before and will say it again, Ernie Els is an embarresment to himself and SA. He should retire and go live in his little house in Herolds Bay. His demeaner and attitude make him look like his not capable or even mildly interetsed in playing the game any more. Mr. Els, you have had your moment of glory, walk into the sunset and enjoy old age.

Well done Goose! I am sure you still have it in you to a couple of big titles.
