Fisher's putter reigns supreme

Mookgophong - Trevor Fisher Jnr has a reputation of being something of a dilettante when it comes to putters, and yet another new one saw him into the lead on Thursday ahead of the final round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final.

But his putting was certainly hot as he raced to a six-under-par 66 while no-one else came even remotely close to matching his score as he took a four-stroke edge into the final round of the R600 000 54-hole tournament at Legend Golf and Safari Estate.

His two-round total was seven-under-par 137.

“If I putt badly, I change my putter straight away and I had a new putter in my bag this week after my putts never fell yesterday," said Fisher.

He carries a trunk full of putters in his car, and the dabbling has been enough for him to earn four wins on the Sunshine Tour, with his last coming in 2009 in the Bloemfontein leg of the Vodacom Origins of Golf series.

It’s been a good year for Fisher with eight top-10s, but the win hasn’t come yet as he constantly finds fault with his putting.

But the eagle-three on his final hole of his second round - the ninth - underlined how well he played on a windy day on which the next best score was the three-under-par 69 by Josh Cunliffe who was level-par and seven shots adrift of Fisher.

He sank a 25-footer for that eagle. “That was lovely,” he said. “It felt really good, and I putted really nicely today. Today, they all went in - all the crucial putts I had went in today.”

Four shots behind him were Ockie Strydom, Louis de Jager and Lyle Rowe in a share of second on 141, with Darren Fichardt, Desvonde Botes, Neil Cheetham, Jean Hugo and Charl Coetzee on 142.

Fisher made some adjustments to the way he placed the ball before putting, which also had an effect on the outcome. “I was lining my ball up last week,” he said, “and I lined it up yesterday a bit again.

“But then, I actually started just putting my ball down, with no particular line up on the ball, and I just putted. I felt I putted freer, and I’m just trying to stay down and get a good roll on it - and everything worked out,” he added.

In last week’s Northern Cape Classic, he made an eagle on 18 in the final round, but it was too little too late for the win which went to Oliver Bekker.

Now, as Bekker had in Kimberley, Fisher’s got the inside track for victory.
