Perth to host groundbreaking tournament

Cape Town - The European Tour is set to shake things up with a new event named the World Super 6 Perth next year.

The Perth International has been scrapped from the European Tour and the PGA Tour of Australia calendar in favour of this new innovation, that features various knockout stages involving stroke and match play.

"Golf needs to innovate," said Brian Thorburn, PGA of Australia chief executive.

"This is a tournament and a format we hope will endure. It's certainly a world-first initiative. I think tours around the world will be looking at it and saying, 'Wow'.

"It's innovation. It's fresh, it's change. If you want to call it golf's version of T20 cricket, I wouldn't be arguing with that."

The tournament will start with three rounds of traditional stroke play for the first three rounds, with a standard cut after the second.

However, the fourth and final day is where things get interesting.

After the third round, the field is cut to 24 players, who then enter a match play style event over just six holes until one player is left standing.

Any ties after six holes will be decided by a knockout hole, which will be a purpose-built 90m hole. Another tie will result in a closest-to-the-pin contest on the same hole.

The event is set to be held from February 16-19 at Lake Karrinyup.
