Durban - When Louis Oosthuizen won his maiden Major title at The Open at St Andrews in 2010, he bought a tractor, and after the second round of the Volvo Golf Champions at Durban Country Club, his farming equipment collection continues to expand.

Oosthuizen not only led the professional competition by a stroke on 12-under-par at the halfway stage, he was also victorious in the team Pro-Am competition on Friday.

The tournament features the unique combination of amateurs and two professionals on the second day, and Oosthuizen combined with Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand, who led after two rounds, and amateur Colin Ledwith of England for the top honours in the team competition.

Head of Volvo event management Per Ericsson made a deal with Oosthuizen before the round for the former Open champion to 'swap' the luxury car for an excavator if he won the team competition. Jaidee, on the other hand, was content to receive his new car.

“On the first hole Per told me if I won a car, I would get my excavator I'm looking for,” Oosthuizen said.

“So, yeah, I'm walking away with a nice gift for the farm. That's going to be a lot of fun next week playing around with it.”

The excavator prize was originally on offer only for a hole-in-one, but Oosthuizen had his eye on it early in the week.

“I've been nagging my wife for a few years that I want something on the farm. I've got a few things that I need to get rid of.

"So actually I had a few discussions this week and they said, well, if you make a hole-in-one, you can get one.

“Then today, on the first, he told me I could get my excavator if I won the car, so I knew that standing over the putt on 18.

"That's why I probably took a bit more time on that putt to get the right line.”
