Johannesburg – Ernie Els carded a birdie at the last hole of the Pinx Golf Club in Jeju, South Korea on Thursday to trail the leader by three shots at the end of the first day of the Ballantines Championship.
Els managed five birdies and a bogey for a score of 68, which is four under par.
Australian Marcus Fraser is the early leader after a round of 65.
Els was one of only 36 players to complete their first round before it was suspended due to heavy fog over the Jeju Island.
More than five hours of play were lost because of the weather.
Els has won twice in America over the past six weeks and this week is playing outside the USA for the first time this year.
He ended joint-fourth at the Pinx Golf Club last year.
He looked comfortable again on Thursday, with his only bogey at the second hole.
Fraser is one stroke ahead of England’s Mark Foster.
Home favourite Ted Oh carded 67.
Anthony Kim, who won a PGA tournament this month, is on 68 with Els. He also carded a birdie on the final hole.
The other South Africans in the tournament – James Kamte and Keith Horne – still have to start their rounds.
Meanwhile, one of the newcomers in the Sunshine Series, Anthony Michael, is leading the Zimbabwe Open that is being played at the Royal Harare Golf Club.
Michael carded a superb 62 in the second round for a score of 129.
