Daly heading Down Under

Sydney - Colourful two-time major champion John Daly will play in the Australian PGA Championship for a third consecutive year in December, tournament organisers said on Monday.

The 44-year-old American, who won the 1995 British Open and 1991 PGA Championship, last won on the US PGA Tour in 2004 and is currently ranked 440 in the world.

But he remains popular with golf galleries for his "Wild Thing" tag, his colourful dress sense and his prodigious driving off the tee.

"I really love coming to Australia," Daly said in a statement.

"The Coolum course is great, the fans love their golf and I hope I can come back this year and really put in a good performance."

PGA of Australia chief executive Max Garske said Daly was still a strong drawcard.

"Last year John was forced to withdraw due to injury, but having recovered quicker than expected he contacted us and said to put him back in the field," Garske said.

"To have that kind of support from a two-time major winner is great for our Tour and it will be good to see him back at Coolum this year."

The Australian PGA Championship, the country's oldest professional event, will be staged at Coolum on Queensland's Sunshine Coast from December 9-12 and will be the final event on both the 2010 PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia Order of Merit.
