Ndola - An eagle on his first hole of the day saw Adilson da Silva start to pull clear of the rest of the field on Saturday in the second round of the Zambia Open being played on the 6 474m Ndola Golf Club.
"It was a good drive, and it was an easy putt," said Da Silva, whose seven-under 66 took him to 16-under for the tournament and a three-shot lead over Warren Abery.
It was Abery who had the round of the day. His nine-under 64 was two shots better than Da Silva's round, but it was not enough to draw him level with the Brazilian who has been on something of a tear in the last fortnight.
He came second to James Kingston in last week's Sunshine Tour tournament at Selborne Golf Club in KwaZulu-Natal, and an improvement in his putting has put him in a position to go one better this week.
"I didn't putt as well in the second round as I did yesterday," said Da Silva, "but I have been hitting the ball really well, and that continued today."
He took 30 putts in the second round compared to the 27 in his opening 64, but he was happy enough with it in any event.
"I made a 25-footer for birdie on the fourth, but that was the only big one of the round," he said.
Da Silva and Abery overtook the early second-round leader Johan Du Buisson, who was alone in third after his seven-under 66 left him four shots off the pace.
Christiaan Basson was two shots further back, and veterans Brett Liddle and Bradford Vaughan were on 137, 10-under-par.
Defending champion Jbe' Kruger has left himself with a mountain to climb if he is to retain his title after he carded an even-par 73 to go with his opening 69, leaving him 12 shots adrift.
Abery, who has been out of golf for four months after the birth of his first child, was looking forward to the final round confrontation with his friend Da Silva.
"We both come from Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal, so it won't be unfriendly," he said, "but I'll be giving it my best shot."
Da Silva knows he just has to keep his head, but that won't mean he will be taking it easy.
"I have a number in mind for tomorrow, and if someone beats that, then good luck to them."
