Abery leads at Affinity

Sun City - Tyrone Mordt shot 69 for round two of the Nedbank Affinity Cup and kept up with the pace as plenty of players went low at Lost City Golf Club on Wednesday.

Mordt, who started on the 10th, moved to eight-under-par and held second ahead of the cut in the R600 000 tournament, one stroke behind leader Warren Abery.

“The one thing that kept me up there today was my putting,” he said. “I just made the putts I needed to and kept the momentum going. Short game and putting helps a lot - there was a stretch where I wasn’t hitting it that well, but I made pars.”

Despite opening the round with a bogey at the 10th, Mordt would not be slowed and rocketed to two-under when he made a hat-trick of birdies from the 12th to the 14th.

“I think the course suits me, it suits my game. You’ve got to think a bit around here - you can’t overpower the course, you just have to position it,” said Mordt.

A bogey at the 16th restricted the 28-year-old’s pace and he carded a pair of pars to turn at one-under for the day.

A further two pars after the turn was Mordt’s way of refocusing, and from the third he began to charge again, producing another hat-trick of birdies from the third to the fifth. “Once I started to make some pars I calmed down and made greens, and from there the putts started sinking,” he said.

Mordt’s third bogey of the day came at the sixth, but he shrugged it off, played out to a string of pars and earned sole possession of second ahead of the final round.

Abery started on the back nine and fired on all cylinders to turn in 31. He went on to shoot 65 and closed the day one shot clear of the field. “Warren (Abery) is a good player, and he’s been there before, so I’ve got my work cut out for me. I just have to try and stick with him tomorrow,” said Mordt.

Defending champion Jake Roos finished at six-under and held third, three strokes off the pace.
“So far, so good - I’m just going to stick to my game-plan and hopefully less mistakes tomorrow,” said Mordt.
