Abery cruises to Affinity win

Sun City - Warren Abery led throughout the third round of the Nedbank Affinity Cup and cruised to victory when he shot 70 on the final day of the R600 000 event at the Lost City Golf Club on Thursday.

Abery claimed his seventh career title when he finished at 11 under par, two strokes clear of Andrew Curlewis and Prinavin Nelson.

"It's great to win - that's what we all play for - and it's nice to be able to close it out," Abery said.

It was a clinical round by the 38-year-old who closed with eight consecutive pars, transferring all of the pressure to his chasers, who faltered under the strain and fell by the wayside.

"Even with a two-shot lead you can blow it, and learning to win is difficult," he said.

"When you've been in that position before it makes it easier."

Abery shrugged off an early bogey and carded birdies at the second and eighth before turning at one under for the day.

"I got off to a shaky start, but managed to right the ship and finish strong," he said.

He made his third and final birdie at the 10th and moved to 11 under, a tally he would maintain to seal victory.

Curlewis charged through the final 18 holes in 65 strokes to take his share of second, three shots shy of Abery.

A double-drop at the 17th was detrimental to Nelson's round, and despite retrieving a shot with birdie at the 18th, he finished tied second.
