Windies women level series

Cape Town - West Indies women’s captain, Stafanie Taylor led from the front, batting and bowling her side to a 45-run victory over the Momentum Proteas to level the three-match Twenty20 (T20) series at the Bidvest Wanderers on Sunday.

Taylor scored 63 runs off 53 balls and took 2/17 to secure a strong win for the visitors. They posted 143/6 in their allotted overs after they were put in to bat first. Shabnim Ismail (3/25) took two quick wickets up front, leaving them on 17/2 after three overs, but Taylor and Deandra Dottin (19) shared a 68-run partnership for the third wicket to instigate the revival of the innings.

After that, short cameos by Stacy-Ann King (24 from 14 balls) and Kyshona Knight (16 from 16 balls) helped the visitors to a good total in the end.

South Africa had a mare of a batting innings. No one got to the 20-run mark, with the highest runs scored by Marizanne Kapp (17), followed by Dinesha Devnarain (16), Ismail (13) and Mignon du Preez (12). They were bundled out for a modest 98 in 18.4 overs with Anisa Mohammed, Hayley Matthews and Taylor taking two wickets each.

Du Preez was disappointed with the batters’ performance. She said:

“Unfortunately it was not our best day at the office. Apart from one or two overs where we didn’t hit our lines and lengths, I think our bowlers did brilliantly.

“Once again it’s our batters who are struggling to fire. I think when we go out to the middle there’s a little bit of indecisiveness and it seems as though they don’t back themselves. We are good batters, you don’t lose that overnight, we just need to work it out. Our execution has not been the best but that’s something we can work on. I think the series decider at Newlands (on Wednesday) is going to be a brilliant game.”
