Sydney Sixers sign Proteas skipper

Sydney - The Sydney Sixers WBBL side have added South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk to their roster, allowing her to join national team-mate Marizanne Kapp.

Van Niekerk, one of the game's best all-rounders, played for the Melbourne Renegades in last season's inaugural Women's Big Bash League, but has swapped red for magenta.

Kapp was a key player for the Sixers last season, winning their Player of the Season gong, while Van Niekerk scored 81 and took three wickets in their last ODI against Oz recently.

Van Niekerk said on the Sixers website of her move: "I met most of the girls last year so I'm looking forward to playing with them this season.

"We've been out here with South Africa for a month now so we've been able to acclimatise well, it should be a great season."

Kapp added: "It’s great to be back with the Sixers for another season and to see all the girls again.

"We went so close last year, it will be great to get off to a good start this season and see if we can go all the way."

Sixers coach Ben Sawyer said of DvN's signature: "Dane is a new member to our squad and we are very happy to have her in our team for WBBL|02.

"Last season, she captured our attention in both games that we played against her, with the bat in hand, but more importantly, with the competitive nature that she played the game.

"It is a quality that we hope that each of our players demonstrates to our opposition, and when we saw it in her, we were hoping that she might one day wear the Magenta.

"Dane's recent promotion to National Captain of South Africa shows how highly she is regarded in the International game."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
