Stokes hit with potential season-ending injury

London - England all-rounder Ben Stokes is set to miss the rest of the Test series against Pakistan, if not the rest of the home summer, depending on what scans on his calf injury reveal.

Stokes was forced to leave the field on day four in Manchester, having completed just six overs, after pulling up sharply during his delivery stride. He was not able to complete the over, and looked in great pain.

The ECB revealed afterwards that he was set for scans on Tuesday, which will determine his availability for the rest of the series. England went on to win the match by 330 runs to level the series at 1-1

Skipper Alastair Cook said of a potential Stokes absence: "He plays on the edge and gives an edge to our side. He does not take a backward step with the bat, ball or in the field, and he drags people with him.

"So if he misses the next Test, he’s a big loss."

Stokes had only recently returned from a knee injury, replacing Steve Finn for this Test, so it remains to be seen whether that just-healed injury contributed to the new one.
