India win toss and bowl against Sri Lanka

Dambulla - India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bowl against Sri Lanka in their opening one-day international in Dambulla on Sunday.

The visitors, who last week achieved their first clean sweep in an overseas three-Test series, are now looking for more consistency in the limited-overs format.

The third-ranked ODI team are fielding three fast bowlers and two spinners in Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Kohli, who made his ODI debut at the same venue in 2008, said his team's aim was to "raise the bar every time we play".

Sri Lanka's new limited-overs captain Upul Tharanga is seeking a fresh start after a disastrous Test series. The hosts must win two of the five ODIs to gain direct entry into the 2019 World Cup.

"We have to forget the Test series and learn from the mistakes. Everyone is confident... new guys coming in, like Malinga, is a plus for the bowling," said Tharanga.

Lasith Malinga will lead the pace attack. Left-arm fast bowler Vishwa Fernando, who made his Test debut in the India series, will play his first ODI game.
