Cape Town – South Africa’s prominent role in international bowling coaching is about to be extended, with news that Lance Klusener is probably Bangladesh-bound.
Cricinfo has reported that Klusener, who turns 39 next month and quit all cricket fairly recently after a stellar career, is in talks with the Bangladesh Cricket Board about becoming their national team’s specialist bowling coach.
A former match-winning all-rounder for the Proteas, “Zulu” was quoted as saying: “I’m in negotiations with them (BCB) … it’s not finalised yet. I hope it will be in the next week.”
Should he be appointed, Klusener will add to an impressive list of South African international bowlers who have been involved in this area.
Eric Simons has recently been assisting head coach Gary Kirsten as bowling consultant to India, while Allan Donald, another post-isolation Proteas paceman, had a spell as England’s bowling coach in 2007 before quitting for family reasons.
And as a fully-fledged all-rounder, Klusener will be adding to the Bangladeshi legacy of the late Eddie Barlow, iconic South African cricketer of the 1960s and 70s who coached the then-fledgling Test nation in some of their earliest forays in the international arena.
Klusener would be taking over the bowling responsibility from Champaka Ramanayake, the former Sri Lankan seamer who has stepped down due to ill health.
Bangladesh’s head coach is the Australian Jamie Siddons.
The former KwaZulu-Natal favourite has completed a level-three coaching course at Cricket South Africa’s High Performance Centre in Pretoria. This would be his first international appointment in that capacity.
Klusener, who played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs for South Africa, was once an out-and-out strike bowler but he adapted his game cleverly in later years to become a shrewd exponent of off-cutters and the like.
He has rich experience of Subcontinental conditions, especially considering that his Test debut against India in Kolkata in 1996 included his best ever innings return of 8/64 to set up a South African triumph.
