Windies get aggressive

Perth - West Indies were 214 for two at stumps on the second day of the third test against Australia at the WACA, Perth, on Wednesday, trailing the hosts by 306 runs.

Ramnaresh Sarwan was on 42 and Narsingh Deonarine had 10.

Chris Gayle hit a blustering 72-run 102 - including nine fours and six maximums - to put West Indies firmly on track after the hosts declared on 520 for seven after lunch.

Together with Travis Dowlin, the pair added 136 runs before the skipper fell, trying to square-cut Doug Bollinger over the in-field, but only managed to scoop the ball into the waiting hands of Shane Watson at point.

Dowlin played very sensibly for 55 - his third test half-century in four tests - but he was caught by Mike Hussey in the slips after reaching for a Mitchell Johnson delivery.

Earlier, yet another Australian batsman failed to convert a fifty into a test ton, as Brad Haddin fell 12 runs short when he gifted Denesh Ramdin his third catch of the innings.

The afternoon was slightly spiced up, however, when Sulieman Benn and Johnson had a gentle push-of-arms in the middle as the latter tried to complete a single.

Haddin joined in the fun, animatedly talking to Benn, Gayle got involved and umpire Billy Bowden had to step in to stop the party.

Starting the day on 339/3, Hussey could only add one run to his overnight score of 81 before he nibbled at a Ravi Rampaul delivery to be caught behind the stumps.

Marcus North and Haddin combined for a 89-run fifth-wicket partnership, but it ended abruptly when the former hit a knee-high full toss straight back to the bowler - North departing for a well-played 68.
