London - Shane Warne believes Monty Panesar could return to England colours for this winter’s Ashes tour to Australia.
Warne has been critical of Panesar in the past but in an interview for the July issue of The Wisden Cricketer magazine he spells out what the troubled spinner needs to do to get back in the selectors’ favour.
“My thing about Monty is that he has stayed the same bowler. I think he works hard but he didn’t seem to learn as he went along. You need to sum up batsmen and conditions – and adapt. That is using your brain, being smart. I am not bagging him,” says Warne.
“As long as he improves, I think he could come back and play for England. He needs his mojo back, his passion and hunger. He has to hold up his hand and say ‘you know what, I’m your man here’. I hope he does come back because the crowds love him.”
Warne believes a successful summer in county cricket will help Monty stake a claim for a place on the Ashes tour:
“He will bowl a lot of overs for Sussex this year and the pitches at Hove will help him. He should be looking to take 70 or 80 wickets and get on the Ashes tour”, says Warne.
