New Zealand were 346 for six at stumps on the second day of the third and final Test against Pakistan in Napier on Saturday, a lead of 123 runs.
Black Caps' captain Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum rescued a floundering innings as they added 176 runs for the sixth wicket, taking their team from a precarious 145/5 to 321 before McCullum was dismissed 11 runs short of his century.
Umar Gul cramped the 'keeper with a bouncer - it could very well have been called a no-ball, too - which the latter could only spoon to gully.
However, at the other end, the New Zealand skipper brought up his fifth test century - not without chance, though, as Danish Kaneria spilled a catch off his own bowling when the batsman had 97.
It could have been Kaneria's fifth wicket as he wreaked havoc earlier on in the day, taking 4/25 in just over 11 overs, confusing Martin Guptill with the wrong 'un and Daniel Flynn with his googly.
Initially, Flynn got the benefit of the doubt, but Kamran Akmal, convinced that the batsman got an edge, appealed against the decision, and third umpire Simon Taufel agreed with Akmal to send Flynn on his way.
Following the third umpire controversy in the Adelaide Test earlier this month, this one could prove to be another questionable one, as - apart from a noise when the ball passed the bat - Hot Spot could not detect an edge.
Tim McIntosh, with this test future in the balance, answered his critics with a patient 74, coming off 266 deliveries, before he became Kaneria's third victim.
Kaneria finished the day on 4/119.
Vettori will continue in the morning on 100, and with him, Daryl Tuffey on 13.
