Van Wyk leads from the front

Kimberley - Chevrolet Knights' captain Morne van Wyk led his side from the front on Thursday to score his 30th half-century against the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins in Kimberley.

The home side was 281/5 at the close of play on the first day of the SuperSport Series match at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley.

Van Wyk (87*), who has hit eight fours and four sixes so far in his innings, will continue his 68-run partnership with Ryan McLaren (37*) on Friday.

The Knights lost their first wicket with the first delivery of the match, when Reeza Hendricks nicked the ball through to wicket-keeper Daryn Smit off the bowling of Quinton Friend (1/45).

After striking so early, it looked as if the Dolphins had made the right choice in sending the Knights in to bat.

The Knights were struggling at 76/3, as Jon Kent (2/32) removed left-handers Dean Elgar (11) and Rilee Rossouw (42).

Elgar tried to pull a delivery from Kent, but top-edged the ball and was caught. Kent bowled a lot of deliveries wide of the crease, tempting the batsmen.

Rossouw went after one of these deliveries and Loots Bosman held on to the catch at gully to dismiss him.

Seven of Kent's 17 overs were maidens.

Ryan Bailey (70) and his captain shared a 94-run partnership over the fifth wicket.

Bailey fell victim to off-spinner Tabraiz Shamzi (1/42) after the visiting side put in a leg-slip. He was caught by Dolphins' captain Imraan Khan. Boeta Dippenaar was also caught by Khan, off the bowling of Imraan Tahir (1/75).
