Tuks top Varsity Cricket log

Potchefstroom - The University of Pretoria (Tuks) toppled Stellenbosch University (Maties) from the top of the Varsity Cricket table on Friday.

With five wins out of six matches, Tuks are sitting pretty on 23 points, but Maties are breathing down their necks on 19 points as the tournament heads into its final round of group matches on Saturday.

Saturday will be a tightly contested affair with four semi-final places in Sunday’s finale up for grabs.

Aside from Kovsies, who have won just one of their six matches, and UCT, who have the same record, all teams are still in with a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. UJ and Pukke have two matches remaining while all other teams have just one game to go.

The tournament has dished up plenty of entertaining contests and although some teams started slow, they have clawed their way back into contention for a semi-final spot.

One of the teams who have bounced back from consecutive losses on the first day is UWC and captain Lizaad Williams has credited his players for the fight they have shown.

“We realised we have a chance to make the semis, we’re more hungry than the first two days, we want to be in the top four and play on Sunday. We lost our first match today (on Friday) and we came back in our second and credit to the guys for sticking it out. We wanted to get a bonus point and we did,” Williams said.

Their win in Friday’s final match has catapulted them into third spot with 14 points, level with Pukke, but ahead on net-run-rate.

Notes on scoring:
In cases where there is a difference between winning margins and team totals, it means a team lost a wicket (or wickets) during the Power Play Plus Over. A loss of a wicket during this over would have originally resulted in the loss of five runs for the batting side. Due to a scoring system complication, they are being added to the bowling team's total as penalty runs instead.
