Cape Town – South African-born England batsman Jonathan Trott reportedly “brawled” with a Pakistan rival before the one-day international at Lord’s on Monday.
That is according to the mass-circulation Sun tabloid, which recently brought to the fore new allegations of malpractice against Pakistani cricketers.
“The pair grabbed each other by the throat and hurled four-letter abuse after Trott taunted fast bowler (Wahab) Riaz as the two teams warmed up for the fourth ODI,” according to the paper.
Trott apparently yelled: “How much money are you going to make from the bookies?”
The players were then pulled apart by former England captain Graham Gooch, after Riaz “made an offensive comment about a member of Trott’s family”.
Tensions between the nations have reached boiling point, especially after counter-claims from Pakistan cricket boss Ijaz Butt that England had received “enormous sums of money” to deliberately lose the third ODI.
The teams are locked at 2-2 with the final match to follow at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday, after England’s latest loss at Lord’s -- they have squandered a 2-0 lead.
Trott played on to Saeed Ajmal for four.
The chief cricket correspondent for the Sun, John Etheridge, said the end of the Pakistan visit “cannot come quickly enough”.
“Roll on this winter’s Ashes. That series in Australia will be rough and tough, but we will believe in what we see.”
