Toyana to assist at Lions

Cape Town - The bizhub Highveld Lions have acquired the services of a new assistant coach in the form of Geoffrey Toyana for the coming cricket season.

Toyana, who joined the team on 1 August 2011, was born in Soweto and formerly played for Transvaal,Gauteng, Easterns and the Titans.

After retiring from playing Toyana was appointed as Head Coach for the provincial team at Easterns Cricket Union and has since also been the assistant coach to the South African u/19 team, various SA “A” XI’s, and also more recently the SA Emerging Players team which toured Australia with the bizhub Highveld Lions Head Coach, Dave Nosworthy.

“There is a big season ahead and it is imperative that we are ready for what the team will face. We are thrilled about having Geoffrey on board and am looking forward to using his vast experience on both domestic and international level to help shape and drive the team forward under coach Dave Nosworthy,” said Cassim Docrat, the Lions' Chief Executive Officer.

“I’m excited to be home! I’m looking forward to working with the team and it’s good to now be based at the very same place where everything started for me,” said Toyana, who is looking to implement his life motto of keeping it simple and working as hard as he can.

The team have just completed the first of their practice matches against the CSA National Cricket Academy in Pretoria where a more than favourable draw was achieved. Nosworthy is pleasantly satisfied with the new appointment. “I’m looking forward to working with Geoff again as he has cricket in his blood and his work ethic and passion will no doubt add a superb dimension to the structures,” Nosworthy said.

The team departs for Port Elizabeth to play a series of pre-season matches against the Chevrolet Warriors and will play their next home practice match against the Sunfoil Dolphins at Bidvest Wanderers Stadium from 13 - 16 September.
