Top orders take a pounding

It was a day of top order collapses and middle-to-lower order recoveries on the second day of the latest round of SuperSport Series matches on Friday.

Live Scoring

The Nashua Dolphins, responding to the Nashua Titans modest total of 242, crashed to 25/4 at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead against an inspired spell from Ethy Mbhlati (3/8 in 8 overs) who dismissed both Imraan Khan and Kevin Pietersen (second ball) leg before wicket.

The Dolphins then recovered through successive partnerships of 90 for the fifth wicket between Ahmed Amla (77 off 142 balls with 10 fours) and Loots Bosman (62 off 79 balls with 10 fours and a six).

Amla then found another partner in Jon Kent in adding 62 for the seventh wicket before he was dismissed and there was more to come as Kent (50 off 122 balls with 6 fours) and Kyle Abbott contributed 46 for the 8th wicket.

By the close Abbott was undefeated on 41 (90 balls, 4 fours) and the Dolphins held a most useful lead of 38 runs with one wicket still intact.

Mbhalati finished with figures of 4/37 in 20 overs.

Much the same story played itself out at Sahara Park Newlands although the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras are still in charge against the Chevrolet Knights.

In a remarkable start to the second day 10 wickets fell for 81 runs. First the Cobras lost 5/22 to Dillon du Preez (5/53) to be all out for what must have seemed a disappointing 330 but it rapidly became a very good total as the visitors lost 5 wickets for 59 runs (Vernon Philander 4 wickets).

Boeta Dippenaar then produced his first substantial innings of the season and in partnership with Ryan McLaren (63 off 157 balls with nine fours) compiled a sixth wicket stand of 139.

Dippenaar batted to the close (65 not out off 198 balls with 13 fours) for the Knights to be 199/6 for an overall deficit of 131 runs. It could still be a close call for the first innings advantage.

Philander did not enjoy further success after his opening burst but still had the excellent figures of 4/36 in 14 overs.

There was once again no play at Axxess DSL St. George’s where the Chevrolet Warriors are playing the bizhub Highveld Lions.
