Titans have the depth to win

Johannesburg - After finishing joint winners of the domestic One-Day Cup last season, the Titans have the right mix of youth and experience to win more trophies says captain Henry Davids.

The cup final, held in Cape Town, was spoilt by two days of persistent rain at Newlands and the trophy was eventually shared between the Cobras and the Pretoria side.

“Having Dean Elgar and Albie Morkel available for all formats, we have good depth,” Davids said at the Dobsonville Cricket Oval where the Titans were taking on the Lions in the Ekasi Challenge - a pre-season friendly match - on Friday.

“You want to win trophies and you need depth in your squad to be able to do that. We have a lot of youngsters coming through. Guys like Theunis de Bruyn - he had a great start to his franchise career. Graeme van Buuren, Shaun von Berg, they're not youngsters but they're early in their careers.”

With the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia a matter of months away, there might be some new inclusions from the Titans side in the Proteas squad, he said.

“There are a couple guys that want to get into the World Cup squad, but it's still a few months away.

“If you put your mind to it, it could be a case of putting too much pressure on yourself. It has to be about enjoying what you're doing and putting runs on the board, as well as putting pressure on the guys who are in the Proteas team and the selectors.”

Davids would look to continue his form from the last 50-over series, where he was the second highest run-scorer with 400 runs at an average of over 44 in the competition.

His good form was rewarded with a call-up to the Proteas ODI side in November, where he made his debut against Pakistan at his home ground in Centurion.

“Last year, I had a good one-day campaign and Champions League, but I didn't have great second half of the season.

“I've been working on a lot of things in the winter and it's starting to pay off. Hopefully I can have good form throughout the season, although that doesn't often happen but if it lasts for 80 percent of the season, it will be good.”
