Johannesburg - Rusty Theron and Justin Kemp made the cut as Cricket SA reduced the provisional squad of 30 players down to a short list of 18 for the ICC World Twenty20 to be played in the West Indies from the end of next month.

The final squad of 15 will be named on March 30.

CSA also named the Test and ODI squads for the tours of the West Indies in May and June that follow the World Twenty20.

Theron, who has impressed in helping the Chevrolet Warriors to the Standard Bank Domestic Pro20 title, is the only uncapped player in the reduced squad. The squad also includes Justin Kemp and Vernon Philander, both of the Nashua Cape Cobras, who have not represented the Proteas since the 2007 tour of Pakistan and the 2008 tour of England respectively.

The Test squad for the tour of the West Indies is unchanged from the group that did duty on the tour of India.

Herschelle Gibbs and Albie Morkel drop out of the ODI squad that did duty in India while Graeme Smith returns from injury and Ryan McLaren is called up as an all-rounder.

“Our aim at the moment is to build formidable squads both for the approaching World Twenty20 as well as for the World Cup next year,” commented coach Corrie van Zyl who was involved in the selection process for the first time.

“An important part of this is to achieve consistency on the field and an important contribution to that will be to be consistent in the selection process as well.

“This may involve changing the starting XI as we play against different opponents under differing conditions.

“The door is not closed on any individual as far as future selection is concerned,” he added. “But we believe that the combinations we have are the best to suit our purposes at the moment.”

Jeez, both Duminy and Prince still in. One of the two needed to be dropped. There are a few new batsmen that deserve a go.

kemp, philander, albie, mclaren, playing for one position. two of them need to be dropped. Botha, vd merwe playing for another, one of them must be dropped and can only be botha. Duminy must be dropped. Include ingram, amla.
protea3/17/2010 11:04 AM
no AMLA, INGRAM IN T20 SQUAD? WHAT THE F&K. Duminy should be dropped? And you cannot have botha and Van De Merwe. Botha cannot bat aggressively or rotate the strike, all he does is have swish at a ball and misses. Ryan Mclaren, albie M and Kemp are all playing for one position. They all quality players however one should be dropped. sa batting a bit thin with no Amla. CSA SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO TO GET DROPPED FROM THE TEAM,SLEEP WITH MANAGEMENT`S WIFE. AND WHAT IS MANAGEMENT SAYING TO THE JOUNGSTERS WHO MAKE IT TO THE FINALS IN DOMESTIC COMPETIONS THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS THAT WHEN DUMINY WALKS OUT TO THE MIDDLE ,BRING ON A SPINNER FOR 1 DEFENITE WICKET.

Can't believe that the top runs scorer in both the domestic MTN40 and the Pro20 competition is not good enough to make any of the squads. Ingram is at the moment in far better form than Duminy but still does not get a chance... What's going on????
Forever Proteas3/17/2010 9:58 AM
We will NEVER be able to win able to WIN A WORLD CUP in any format of the game because our selections are made based on race… And yes I am a non – white Proteas fan. WTF is Vernon Philander doing in the team??? Is this a joke??? The Proteas have aspirations of dominating the cricket world…. Yeah right choose players on merit and then we can talk again…… For crying out loud they are persisting with JP instead of letting the poor chap find his confidence and form again because he is a talented player however if he does not he is of no use to us.

What a joke... How can you have 4 similar role players in a T 20 side McClaren, Albie, Vernon, Kemp, Parnell? What is Steyn doing in the T20 side??. He is getting hammered in the IPL. Steyn is a 50/50 and test player Why is Abdulla dropped?...very good T20 bowler Seems like van zyl is no better than mickey mouse

Hey ! selectors why do you make the biggest mistake at a crucial time, The board had dropped some key in the past like Zullu ,Cullinan,Boje Ntini and now GIBBS .If south Africa want to sea the trophy World cup 2011 in the home then they must remain GIBBS in squad till 2011 selectoin, otherwise SA people, fans will have to realize again ...I pray to GOD to help the selectors and SA side to play good cricket to lift WC2011......Thanks
Jeremy3/16/2010 7:31 PM
Why has Gibbs been omitted again and why is Duminy in any of the squads? Clearly he has a confidence problem - I'm sure Ingram can do a job for us or do the selectors not watch local cricket? If anyone is watching the IPL, you'll notice that Gibbs remains a match winner and is STILL a great fielder!!!

a solid squad but who was behind: Duminy & Prince staying in the test side!!.....plus Tsotsobe is too slow 4 test cricket!! Philander and Langeveldt being chosen!!!(one is distinctly average and the other is way over the hill!)......and where is our cover for Boucher or Morkel and Steyn????? are their no young quickies in the country!.......i will suport SA in most circumstances (barring a political 15 or 11) so go Proteas, but i have to say the proteas will not beat the west indies with those squads picked and Aus will win the 20/20!!! :(:(:(

It is to my suprise not to see Collin Ingram on the list, a leading run scorrer on both short forms of the game in domestic competition. Please give him a chance by next year world cup he'll be well exposed to international cricket (future, future, future and consistancy).
Vic J3/16/2010 6:51 PM
As a Natalian it just shows how k#k they are by the presentation. Its a embarresment. I can still remember the good old Natal days. Today there seems to much boetie/boetie. Ash, keep the flag flying.
Fanus3/16/2010 6:18 PM
What justification is there for JP Duminy being in the test & ODI squads?
Shorts3/16/2010 4:47 PM
In my view CSA have to find an alternative to Graeme Smith. He seems to be so injury prone, possibly with very weak bones in his hands, that the time has come to say cheers. Some international cricketers retire because they have aged, others have lost their ability and a few have to accept that certain parts of their body just cannot stand the continous punishment. Smith appears to fall into the last category. I am sure that he would like to continue at the highest level, but he cannot be relied upon to be in peak condition for the entire game. So best he bows out gracefully right now, in the best interests of the Proteas. The SA squad cannot, in todays' highly competitive environment, afford to carry any potentially problematic passengers, even if they happen to be the official team captain !!
The Voice of Reason3/16/2010 4:44 PM
A good T20 squad. If it was me I would drop Kemp, McLaren and Vilander to get the final 15.
Skipper3/16/2010 4:32 PM
No Albie Morkel in the T20 squad? Recon that is a mistake.
the little cherub3/16/2010 4:22 PM
There was a time when an 'international' cap had value. Now you can get them wholesale! Kemp, Philander et al..............this is laughable.
tman3/16/2010 4:06 PM
what does Ingram have to do to get in there?

how does duminy still make the squad?...huh...did i miss something in the last few months - his form has been rotten...y cant he be dropped.....
Saato3/16/2010 3:56 PM
Now to drop philander, rusty and Mclaren, then you have another predictable squad. Albie's done sh*t in national colours in ages, neither has jp, botha and roelof. I can see it already-steyn&parnell opening, albie 1st change, duminy, roelof and botha doing spin and kallis chipping in. smith opens with bosman, albie coming in after 16.3 overs and scores 6 of 8. we will make the quarters and lose to the unpredictable pakis, windies or lankans. any1 willing to bet against me?
Mundo3/16/2010 3:49 PM
Oh no..JP in the team.. He should have been eliminated and Colin Ingram should be there..What a waste of space..
JustinD3/16/2010 3:41 PM
Err.... no Ingram from the Warriors.....CSA suck big time.
