Bloemfontein - The Chevrolet Warriors lurched to 233 for five in their second innings before bad light forced an early close on the third day of their SuperSport Series match against the Chevrolet Diamond Eagles at the OUTsurance Oval on Saturday.
The visitors trailed the home side’s first innings score by 116 runs with just five wickets left before bad light meant that play was called off with 19 overs still to be bowled in the day.
Jon-Jon Smuts was the mainstay of the innings thanks to his dashing 100 off 134 balls with his knock including 22 fours.
Opening batsman Smuts and Colin Ingram (59) had held the Eagles up with a second-wicket stand of 128 off 31.2 overs.
But Smuts was dismissed with the first ball after the tea break when he edged a delivery from seamer Victor Mpitsang through to keeper Morne van Wyk.
Mpitsang claimed the wicket of Arno Jacobs in the same over as the Eastern Cape franchise slipped to 181 for three.
Ingram departed 36 runs later before Davy Jacobs (six) was trapped leg-before by left-arm spinner Con de Lange.
The Warriors’ last two recognised batsmen, Craig Thyssen (29 not out) and Justin Kreusch, who had yet to score, were at the crease when play was called off.
Mpitsang ended the day with figures of three for 26 off 13 overs.
Earlier, seamer Johan van der Wath finished with figures of five for 54 as the Warriors were bowled out for 260 in their first innings, 349 runs behind the Eagles’ first innings score.
The Warriors began the day on 235 for seven but the home side needed just five balls to make the breakthrough as Van der Wath trapped Kreusch (40) leg-before.
Van der Wath then completed his 16th first-class five-wicket haul when he removed Corbyn Dolley (five).
Garnett Kruger held up the Eagles’ bowling attack for a touch as he smashed his way to 24 not out off 20 balls before De Lange ended the innings, 40 minutes after the start of play, when he bowled Lonwabo Tsotsobe (one).
Fast bowler CJ de Villiers ended the Warriors’ first innings with figures of three for 59 while De Lange picked up two for 32.
