Warriors in search of first win

Christo Buchner

Johannesburg – The weekend’s three SuperSport matches offer the six teams a last opportunity of improving their log positions before a break of a month-and-a-half during which one-day cricket will be played.

Notwithstanding two successive defeats, the Titans trail the log-leading Cape Cobras by less than a point.

The Cobras play the Warriors who have been struggling and are last on the log in East London.

In Kimberley, the Knights (28.5) will be looking to improve their position at the expense of the Titans. The home side are still struggling to get going.

The Lions host the third-placed Dolphins at the Wanderers.

Meanwhile, Altus Momberg writes that Ashwell Prince has scored a century in all three of the Warriors’ SuperSport games this year, but is yet to be on the winning side.

The experienced Test batsman said on Wednesday that he and his team-mates are determined to put things right against the champion Cobras from Thursday.

“There are a number of aspects of our game that can improve, but it’s important that we improve our batting performances in the first innings’ of games. If you struggle in your first innings you will be on the back foot for the rest of the game and then it’s more difficult to force a victory,” said Prince.

Johann de Jager reports that Morné van Wyk is not too concerned about the form of the Knights batsmen, in spite of their lengthy batting order.

Reeza Hendricks (124) scored their only century in the second innings of their match against the Lions at the Wanderers.

Van Wyk, the team’s captain, said that several half-centuries (11) have been scored and there were also batsmen – like him with a score of 97 – that came close to centuries.

The Knights’ only win to date was over the Dolphins in Kimberley.

Seamer CJ de Villiers will face his former team-mates for the first time at the Diamond Oval after joining the Titans.
