Warriors debut two players

Port Elizabeth - Border allrounder Darryl Brown and fast bowler Andrew Birch will make their SuperSport Series cricket debuts for the Chevrolet Warriors against the Nashua Dolphins at Sahara Oval St George' starting on Thursday.

The Warriors's bowling stock is depleted due to injuries and international commitments and the selectors have been forced to dip into their amateur team resources.

Wayne Parnell, Johan Botha and Robin Peterson are involved in Standard Bank Pro20 cricket for the Proteas this weekend while Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Sinethemba Mjekula and Lyall Meyer are on all on the physio's table.

Andrew Birch's promotion has been expected after solid performances for the EP Amateur team and in the Warriors's Pro20 campaign.

Brown's selection has surprised somewhat but a closer look at his statistics for the Border Amateur team this season justifies his call-up as one of the next best.

The right-handed batsman, who celebrates his 26th birthday today, has averaged 40.75 with the bat in 10 innings including one hundred and a fifty. He has also taken 19 wickets at 23.31 with his medium pacers.

Ashwell Prince returns to the team after his heroics against Australia at Newlands.

But the left-hander will not open the batting and is likely to bat in his preferred position of number five.

Batsman Riaan Jeggels is back in the side after a lengthy absence as is fast bowler Mario Olivier. Justin Kreusch is likely to be the unlucky player to sit out of the fixture.

The Warriors squad: Jon-Jon Smuts, Craig Thyssen, Arno Jacobs, Zander de Bruyn, Ashwell Prince, Davy Jacobs (capt), Riaan Jeggels, Justin Kreusch, Darryl Brown, Andrew Birch, Mario Olivier, Rusty Theron.
