Van Zyl ton gives Cobras edge

Benoni - Twenty-three-year-old Stiaan van Zyl scored a career-best 172 for the Cape Cobras in their SuperSport Series match against the Titans at Willowmoore Park on Saturday, helping to take his team to 408.

At close of play on the third day, the Titans were 63 without loss in their second innings, still trailing the Cobras by 132 runs.

Van Zyl shook off the effects of a nasty blow to his left arm, which sent him to hospital for an X-ray on Friday, and took complete control of the situation when he resumed his innings on Saturday morning. His first 50 came off just 62 balls, and his century the sixth of his career came off 132.

In the process of surpassing his previous best of 167 not out, he shared in a number of valuable partnerships. He and Justin Ontong put on 73 for the fourth wicket, and he and Justin Kemp put on 88 off 102 balls for the fifth wicket, but the most valuable was his 118 run stand with Vernon Philander.

His final partnership, with Ryan Canning, who batted with a runner after suffering the ill-effects of a dodgy chicken, was worth 47 runs. Van Zyl's innings finally came to an end after five hours and 23 minutes, when he was caught behind by Mangaliso Mosehle off Ethy Mbhalati.

Captain Justin Kemp, who also had a trip to hospital for X-rays after being hit on the right hand by a vicious rising ball from CJ de Villiers, appeared to be unaffected by the blow and made 49 off 61 balls before he was caught at deep square leg by Blake Snijman off Mbhalati.

Half an hour after tea, Jacques Rudolph caught Charl Langeveldt off Viljoen for two, and the Cobras were all out for 408, giving them a substantial first innings lead of 195.

Mbhalati and Hardus Viljoen took three wickets each, and De Villiers and Roelof van der Merwe two each. All the bowlers came in for punishment, particularly from Van Zyl, and would have been pleased to see the innings come to an end.

At close of play, Blake Snijman was not out on 30 and Jacques Rudolph had 31. The match appears to be heading for a draw.
