Bloemfontein - The Nashua Cape Cobras were frustrated by bad weather for the second day in a row as their four-day fixture against the Chevrolet Knights at the OUTsurance Oval failed to get even to the toss.
The Cobras, the SuperSport Series champions, had already lost one game to bad weather earlier in the campaign against the Chevrolet Warriors at Buffalo Park.
What made matters worse for them was that, while they were twiddling their collective fingers, the log-leading Nashua Titans were helping themselves to bonus points in their match against the bizhub Highveld Lions at SuperSport Park.
Jacques Rudolph scored his 40th first-class century (171 off 245 balls with 21 fours) on the first day and Henry Davids (130 off 269 balls with 14 fours and 3 sixes) scored his 9th on the second. The result was that the Titans, after being sent into bat, compiled a total of 508 in 145 overs, collecting more than 5 batting points along the way.
Their prospects of an outright victory remained bright when the new ball attack of Ethy Mbhalati and Albie Morkel picked up 2 wickets in the first 8 overs.
However, Stephen Cook and Neil McKenzie pulled the Lions’ innings together with an unbroken 3rd wicket stand of 121 in 35 overs. Cook will resume on 61 (145 balls, 7 fours) and McKenzie on 66 (98 balls, 9 fours and a six).
In the other match where play was possible a keen tussle is developing for the first innings advantage between the Chevrolet Warriors and the Nashua Dolphins at Axxess DSL St. George’s.
The Warriors, who won the toss, survived the spin bowling wiles of new Proteas’ cap Imran Tahir (6/134 in 36 overs) to post a competitive total of 287.
The Dolphins were in early trouble in their reply (21/3 in 13 overs) but their lengthy middle-order put together a succession of reasonable partnerships to take them to 259/7 by the close, a deficit of only 28 runs.
Ahmed Amla (76 off 195 balls with 12 fours) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (55 off 104 balls with 6 fours) were the main contributors.
Nicky Boje has had an excellent match for the Warriors adding bowling figures of 2/88 in 37 overs to the top score of 59 (86 balls, 4 fours and a six) that he made in his side’s innings.
