Rampant Lions crush Dolphins

Durban - The Highveld Lions registered a telling 10-wicket victory over the Dolphins in their SuperSport Series match at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Saturday.

The Lions bowled the Dolphins out for 234 in their second innings, leaving them with just five runs to make for victory.

The runs would come in eight balls as Stephen Cook took three off the last ball of Hashim Amla's over and David Miller then fired a ball down leg for four byes.

Jon Kent (30), Kyle Abbott (28) and Mthokozisi Shezi (22) enjoyed some free-scoring batting in the lower-order to ensure the Dolphins at least did not lose by an innings after the woes stemming from their top-order collapse.

The Lions three frontline seamers, Cliffe Deacon (17-7-32-2), Robbie Frylinck (13-4-24-2) and Craig Alexander (16-3-64-2) combined seamlessly, while few batsmen played left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi (three for 78) with total confidence.

Shamsi trapped Kent in front and then had Abbott caught in the deep, before Alexander had Shezi caught close in to wrap up the innings.

Deacon made a telling breakthrough just before tea to reduce the Dolphins to 171 for seven at the break.

Khaya Zondo, who had impressed up till then with his shot selection and strokeplay in scoring 43, elected to slash at a wide delivery from Deacon and edged a catch to Neil McKenzie in the slips. He had hit six fours and a six.

Deacon had earlier claimed the wicket of one-time South African opener Imraan Khan as he went into tea with figures of two for 32 in 15 overs.

Frylinck had also taken two wickets as the Dolphins went into lunch on 84 for four, and fast bowler Alexander and Shamsi took the other wickets to fall in the second session.

Daryn Smit took his tally to 27 before he failed to tell Shamsi's arm ball from his stock delivery and was bowled trying to cut.

Miller scored 18, but he was trapped leg-before during an over from Alexander in which he was all at sea. He was beaten by a tremendous, fast yorker that would be the favourite for ball of the day.

With the match between the Titans and the Eagles leaning heavily towards a draw, the win for the Lions pushed them within 0.8 points of second place on the final log, constituting a top-class second half of the season for them.

Earlier, the heroics of Shezi with the ball were not enough to prevent the Dolphins sliding towards defeat at the hands of a Highveld Lions side inspired by the all-round exploits of Frylinck.

Shezi claimed phenomenal figures of seven for 45 in 25.4 overs to bowl the Lions out for 415, but the aggressive batting of Frylinck, who slammed 70, gave the visitors a lead of 230.

The Lions began the day on 390 for seven in their first innings and Frylinck went to his sixth first-class half-century, extending his partnership with Deacon to 105 before Shezi killed off the innings.

The accurate left-armer had both Frylinck and last man Shamsi caught behind the wicket and also, for good measure, ran out Deacon for 35 with a direct hit from long leg.

But the Dolphins' hopes of saving the game quickly died as Bradley Barnes (4), Khan (9) and Hashim Amla (7) were all caught behind the wicket.

Ahmed Amla was then dismissed for a quickfire 34 in extraordinary circumstances, nearly decapitating Frylinck with a straight drive, which the bowler parried to mid-off for Alviro Petersen to take the catch.
