Johannesburg - A century from Ashwell Prince provided the highlight of day’s play as the Chevrolet Warriors reached stumps holding a 296-run lead against the bizhub Highveld Lions on the third day of their SuperSport Series match at Axxess DSL St. George’s in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
Prince scored 134 as the Warriors posted 278 for eight declared in their first innings.
Rain washed out the first day’s play and a wet pitch stymied efforts to play on the second day and the Lions, in an attempt to force a result, forfeited their first innings.
The home side then reached 18 for one in their second innings.
Prince’s ton, his third of the season, came up off 209 balls while the left-handed batsman struck 15 fours and two sixes.
Prince reached three figures for the 31st time in his first class career off 167 balls as the 33-year-old provided the bulk of his team’s first innings runs.
Left-arm spinner Paul Harris, with four for 112 off 39 overs, was the pick of the Lions’ bowlers.
The match finally got underway with the Lions winning the toss and electing to field.
Jon-Jon Smuts and Michael Smith (21) gave the home team a cracking start thanks to an adventurous first-wicket stand of 59 in 12.3 overs before Smith skipped down the wicket to Harris only to be stumped by keeper Thami Tsolekile.
Craig Thyssen (1) was then trapped leg-before by seamer Robbie Frylinck as the Warriors slipped to 68 for two.
Smuts made his way to an entertaining 42 off 45 balls with nine fours before he edged a delivery from Harris to the safe hands of Neil McKenzie at first slip.
Harris was clearly enjoying himself as he snared his third wicket of the morning when Arno Jacobs (12) offered up a bat/pad catch to Stephen Cook at short leg as the Warriors limped to 96 for four at lunch.
Prince and Justin Kreusch (13) then shared a 49-run fifth-wicket partnership before fast bowler Craig Alexander had Kreusch caught at deep backward square leg.
Alviro Petersen’s part-time off-spin then accounted for Nicky Boje (17) when the left-handed batsman edged a delivery through to keeper Tsolekile before Harris then Lyall Meyer (2) with the last ball before tea.
Andrew Birch (28) was the last Warriors’ batsman to be dismissed in the innings when he was run out at the keeper’s end after a direct hit from Petersen.
After batting so well in his team’s first innings Prince opened the batting in the second but he departed for four when he chipped a delivery from medium-pacer Zander de Bruyn to cover.
Smuts, on 10, and Michael Smith, on four, were the not out batsmen at the close of play.
