Ontong solid for Cobras

Paarl - Ashwell Prince and Michael Smith took the Warriors to a solid 41 without loss in their second innings at stumps on the second day of their SuperSport Series match against the Cape Cobras at Boland Bank Park in Paarl on Friday.

Prince contributed a patient 13 off 41 deliveries while Smith weighed in with a more aggressive 26 off 38 deliveries as the Warriors made a good fist of wiping out the deficit that they faced on the first innings. The visitors ended the day 56 runs adrift of the Cobras’ first innings score of 240 all out.

The Warriors ended the Cobras’ first innings 45 minutes before the scheduled close when left-arm spinner Jon-Jon Smuts trapped Francios Plaatjies leg-before as the Western Cape franchise was bowled out holding an overall lead of 97 runs.

The home side’s score was built around half-centuries from Justin Ontong and Ryan Canning.

The right-handed Ontong brought up his 41st first-class century off 123 deliveries and he made his way to 69 off 145 balls before falling to off-spinner Corbyn Dolley.

Richard Levi (23) and Ontong added 61 runs for the fourth wicket, the highest partnership of the innings, and Ontong and Canning built on the platform by constructing a fifth-wicket stand that produced 45 runs.

Ontong’s dismissal left the home side on 171 for five and Dolley was not done as he removed Robin Peterson (0) with his next delivery.

Seamer Rusty Theron than captured the wickets of Vernon Philander (6) and Rory Kleinveldt (0) to reduce the Cobras to 207 for eight with the bowler ending the innings with figures of four for 63.

But Canning, who ground his way to his half-century off 133 balls, ensured that the home side would enjoy a significant advantage on the first innings over their rivals as he scored 60 off 147 balls before he was bowled by paceman Makhaya Ntini.

The Warriors enjoyed a fine start in the field as Theron had opening batsman Alistair Grey (18) caught behind by keeper Athenkosi Dyili with the Cobras losing their first wicket of the morning without adding to their overnight score of 51.

Fourteen runs later Ntini removed the left-handed Stiaan van Zyl (27), courtesy of a leg-before decision, as the Cobras slipped to 65 for three.

Ntini returned figures of three for 51.
