Lions trapped by lethal Cobras

Johannesburg - Rory Kleinveldt claimed all three of the remaining wickets early on the third morning as the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras sealed a comprehensive innings and 83 run victory over the bizhub Highveld Lions in their SuperSport Series match at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday.

The Cobras medium-pacer ended with figures of five for 42 to help bowl the visitors out for 172 in their second innings.

They were already staring down the barrel by stumps on day two when they closed on 146 for seven, still with a deficit of 109 after their woeful first innings of 86.

The defending champions replied with 341 and the Lions again battled in their second innings with tail-enders Cliffe Deacon and Dale Deeb taking them to the close with an unbroken 52-run partnership.

But that was ended in the fifth over of the day when Kleinveldt, who ended with seven for 73 overall, dug one in and Deeb succeeded only in fending the ball to wicketkeeper Dane Vilas for 36.

That ended the partnership on 68 and by the end of the same over the Lions were nine down when Kleinveldt cleaned up Craig Alexander for a duck.

And Pumelela Matshikwe (two) was the last wicket to fall when he edged behind to Vilas, leaving Deacon stranded on 35 not out and handing the Cobras a third win out of four this season, which moves them top of the table.
