Knights hold out for draw

Cape Town - The Chevrolet Knights held out for a draw against the Nashua Cape Cobras on the final day of the SuperSport Series clash at Newlands on Sunday.

Thanks mainly to Dean Elgar (84) and Boeta Dippenaar (61 not out), the Knights reached 243/7 (102 overs) when stumps were drawn. At the start of the day's play the Cobras set the Knights a victory target of 352 runs.

Off-spinner Claude Henderson (3/84) was the pick of the Cobras attack and his fellow spinner Justin Ontong followed closely behind with 2/40.

Ontong was named 'Man-of-the-Match' for his first innings century, which included 16 boundaries. Seamer Vernon Philander was also a contender for the award after his 6/61 in the Knights' first innings.

Earlier on Sunday, things looked promising for the Cobras when Ontong captured the visitors' first second-innings wicket in the over ahead of the lunch break.

In the post-lunch session Ontong snared another wicket and things looked even more promising when Henderson and paceman Monde Zondeki also contributed to the Knights' collapse with a wicket each.

However, when Henderson struck twice early in the final session the Cobras were really fired up but the only good fortune that came their way towards the end of the match was a lone wicket for Philander - while the rest of Knights' batting stood their ground defiantly.

In the first innings the Cobras returned 330, to which the Knights replied with 234. The Cobras scored 255/7 declared in their second visit to the crease.
