Knights dominate Dolphins

Pietermaritzburg -  Bad light brought a premature end to play in the SuperSport Series match at the City Oval with the Chevrolet Knights in dominant mood on 428/6 against the Nashua Dolphins at stumps on Friday.

Obus Pienaar was the main contributor to the run festival in Maritzburg, slamming 119 off 166 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes.

Reeza Hendricks (61, 95 balls, 9x4) and Dean Elgar (74, 144 balls, 11x4, 1x6) got the innings off to a rollicking start with a 106-run opening partnership in 30 overs.

Ryan Bailey (80, 133 balls, 12x4) looked destined for a century before he nicked the occasional bowler Vaughn van Jaarsveld to Daryn Smit behind the stumps.

Hendricks was bowled by a swinging delivery from the new-ball bowler Keegan Eccles.

Elgar got a lifter from the new-ball partner of Eccles, Brady Barends, and hit it to point, where David Miller gleefully pouched it.

Resuming on 237/3, Pienaar and Bailey looked in dominant mood against the spinners Abdul Razak and Keshav Maharaj before Bailey got lazy against Van Jaarsveld.

Adrian McLaren (23, 37 balls, 3x4) nicked Maharaj to Smit when he was set for a big one.

Ryan McLaren, on 20, and Charl Pietersen, on 17, will continue on Saturday.

Eccles, with 1/70 in 28 overs, had the misfortune of seeing a regulation catch off Elgar’s bat dropped by Devon Conway at second slip early on. He was the best bowler on view.

Maharaj finished with 1/80 from 21 overs and Razak took 1/80 in 20 overs.
