Khan blazes to 99

Imraan Khan fell agonisingly short of a century as the Dolphins reached 186 for four at stumps on the second day of their SuperSport Series match against the Highveld Lions at Wanderers in Johannesburg on Friday.

Khan blazed his way to 99 in two hours and 13 minutes before he was bowled around his legs by left-arm spinner Monty Panesar after the left-handed batsman attempted an ill-advised sweep shot.

The 25-year-old Khan brought up his first half-century of the season off 75 deliveries and he faced just 41 more balls to race to his final score with his knock including 18 fours.

Khan, the Dolphins’ captain, and Loots Bosman gave the visitors an ideal start to their innings as the pair put on 60 runs for the first wicket before Bosman was caught behind off the bowling of seamer Pumelela Matshikwe.

Bosman was dismissed for an entertaining 30 off 33 deliveries which included five fours and a six.

Pierre de Bruyn (13) joined his skipper at the crease and the pair added 89 runs for the second wicket off 20.1 overs before the right-handed De Bruyn edged a delivery from fast bowler Friedel de Wet into the safe hands of Jonathan Vandiar at second slip.
Bad light then forced the players from the field shortly before the tea break with the combatants only returning after a break of two hours and 20 minutes.

There was just enough time for Panesar to pick up the wicket of Cameron Delport (14) before Ahmed Amla (19 not out) and Jon Kent (3 not out) took the visitors to the close of play, 173 runs behind the Lions on the first innings.

Panesar ended the day with figures of two for 39.

Earlier, the Dolphins bowled the Lions out for 359 before lunch.

The home side began the day on 296 for six but medium-pacer Kent struck the first blow for the visitors during the morning session when he had Thami Tsolekile caught behind by keeper Daryn Smit for a duck with the Lions on 301 for seven.

Zander de Bruyn took his overnight score from 58 to 66 off 124 deliveries before he was bowled by seamer Johann Louw to give the Dolphins’ bowler his third wicket of the innings.

Smit then handed his gloves to Cameron Delport and proceeded to end the Lions’ resistance as the leg-spinner trapped Matshikwe (6) lbw before removing Ugasen Govender (12) courtesy of a caught and bowled effort.

De Wet provided some late impetus to his team’s innings as he blasted his way to 35 not out off 45 deliveries with his lively knock including four boundaries and a six.

Kent ended the innings with figures of four for 73 while Louw captured three for 53.
