Kemp leads from the front

Paarl - Cape Cobras skipper Justin Kemp led from the front with a four-wicket haul against the strong Titans line-up on the first-day of the four-day SuperSport Series match at Paarl on Thursday.

Thanks to Kemp's four wickets in 18.1 overs, the Titans were restricted to 240 runs in their first innings which lasted 77.1 overs.

When the players walked of the park the Cobras had reached 42 for one with Alistair Gray on 13 and Stiaan van Zyl on 19, together the pair had put on 35 runs for the second wicket.

The Titans batsmen, with the exception of Gulam Bodi (64), Heino Kuhn (48) and Albie Morkel (43), were kept quiet for most of the day as the Cobras attack captured wickets at regular intervals.

Cobras new-ball bowler Vernon Philander made the initial breakthrough six overs into the morning session when Blake Snijman (8) offered a low catch to wicket-keeper Ryan Canning.

Francois Plaatjies and Kemp each claimed a wicket ahead of the lunch break to reduce the Pretoria visitors to 79 for three after 29 overs.

The Titans upped their batting tempo after the break and the session yielded 110 runs for the loss of only two wickets in 29 overs thanks mainly to Kuhn who cracked 8 fours before Plaatjies ended his threatening innings.

Kemp picked up another wicket, which left the Titans 189/5 when tea was taken.

Philander led the charge in the final session with the prized scalp of Bodi, the mainstay of the Titans innings.

Morkel, like Kuhn, was also looking to pounce on anything loose but five boundaries later he was done by a slower delivery from Charl Langeveldt.

Next Plaatjies snatched his third stick and Kemp completed the demolition job with another two wickets in quick succession as the Titans innings folded at 240. The Titans managed a mere 51 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 19-over stay at the crease after tea.

Speedster Ethy Mbhalati raised the spirits in the Titans camp with Andrew Puttick's wicket in his second over with the Cobras's first innings total on seven.
