Hendricks saves the day

Johannesburg - A fighting century from Reeza Hendricks, who carried his bat, enabled the Knights to hang on for a disappointing draw, in their SuperSport match against the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers on Sunday.

For the Lions it was a moral victory, as for the second successive week they won the battle of the bonus points.

When the players shook hands the Knights were on 204 for nine, with Hendricks on 124 - his 13th first-class century - and Victor Mpitsang on nought.

The Knights started off with purpose, putting on 68 for the first-wicket between Hendricks and Dean Elgar.

Elgar was the rock while Hendricks got on with the job of scoring runs, his penchant for not wanting to run on a hot Highveld afternoon only too obvious. his half-century was struck off only 49-balls, with 10 boundaries.

Elgar (16), eventually departed, a Robbie Frylinck bouncer finding the shoulder of the bat. The ball popped up for Thami Tsolekile to take the easiest of catches.

A flurry of four wickets for 31 runs in 10 overs saw Rilee Rossouw (18), Boeta Dippenaar (0), Ryan Bailey (4) the Knights captain Morne van Wyk (6) all back in the hut.

Then it all became a question of time as Hendricks started to run out of partners.

Earlier, the home side started the fourth and final day on 424 for six, with Zander de Bruyn and Thami Tsolekile on 32 and 16 respectively, a lead of 52 runs.

De Bruyn had looked comfortable throughout his innings, however, in the eighth over of the day, he played forward to a full length delivery from Victor Mpitsang and was castled, eight runs short of his half-century.

From then on it was a procession, as the last four wickets fell for 34 runs.
