Kimberley - Johan van der Wath and Ryan McLaren scored half-centuries to put the Diamond Eagles in as commanding position at close of play in their SuperSport match at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Thursday.
The Eagles scored 327 in reply to the Dolphins first-innings 236 all out.
When the umpires called time the Dolhins were struggling at 10 for two at the close of play on the second day with Van der Wath dismissing both openers Loots Bosman (0) and Imraan Khan (1) without the batsmen troubling the scorers.
Bosman was trapped lbw and Khan was caught by Boeta Dippenaar at first slip.
Daryn Smit on seven and nightwatchman Mthokozisi Shezi on one will take up the challenge when play resumes.
The home side was in trouble at 169 for seven when Van der Wath joined McLaren in the middle. The two allrounders shared a 105-run partnership for the eighth-wicket. Van der Wath (61) made his intentions clear from the start reaching his half century after facing a mere 48 balls. He struck nine fours and two boundaries which cleared the boundary rope.
McLaren (86) was released a day before the match by the Proteas and proved his worth with his innings helping the Diamond Eagles to secure a lead of 91 runs on the first-innings.
McLaren and Van der Wath were both dismissed by former teammate Johan Louw, both caught caught by Mthokozisi Shezi.
Dean Elgar continued his excellent form with the bat scoring 69 runs before being caught behind the stumps by Daryn Smit off the bowling of Quinton Friend.
