Dolphins, Cobras in tame draw

Pietermaritzburg - The Dolphins and the Cape Cobras played out a tame draw on the fourth day of their SuperSport Series match at the Oval in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday.

The Cobras reached 300 for two in their second innings, giving them an overall lead of 215 runs over the Dolphins, before both captains agreed to call the match off with an hour’s play still remaining.

Centuries from Alistair Gray and Stiaan van Zyl were the high points of the day’s play as the pair combined to put on 200 runs, off 355 balls, for the second-wicket.

After toiling all day for a single wicket the advent of the second new ball paid dividends for the Dolphins as left-arm seamer Yusuf Abdulla picked up the wicket of Grey, caught by Imraan Khan, at second slip shortly after the tea break.

Grey, who had gone to his second century of the season in 303 minutes off 215 balls, was out for 131 in 345 minutes off 255 balls with 19 fours and his departure left the Cobras on 253 for two.

Van Zyl brought up his second first-class century in 272 minutes off 191 balls with 13 fours off the last ball before played was called off with the left-handed Van Zyl not out on 103.

With Van Zyl at the wicket when stumps were drawn was JP Duminy on 23.

The first three days of the match were all severely disrupted by bad light and day four was more of the same.

Play was delayed during the morning session for just over half-an-hour because of bad light and the Cobras eventually resumed their second innings on 35 without loss, trailing the Dolphins by 50 runs on the first innings.

When the not out overnight batsmen, Andrew Puttick and Gray, came to the crease they added 18 runs to their opening-stand before Puttick edged a delivery from medium pacer John Kent through to keeper Daryn Smit to be out for 25 and reduce the Cobras to 53 for one.

Gray and Van Zyl then ensured that the visitors reached lunch on 134 for one and, in the process, wiped out the deficit that the Cobras faced on the first innings.

Kent ended the innings with figures of one for 28 while Abdulla claimed one for 65.

The result means that both the Dolphins and the Cobras remain winless in this year’s SuperSport Series.
