Cobras tighten their grip

East London - Justin Ontong  scored his 17th first-class century to enable the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras to tighten their grip on the second day of their SuperSport Series match against the Chevrolet Warriors at Buffalo Park on Friday.

The Warriors made a manful effort to defend their first innings total of 216 from the first day to have the Cobras four down in their reply with 90 runs still needed to level the totals.

But Ontong (105 off 210 balls, 15 fours) and his captain, Justin Kemp (69 off 93 balls, 10 fours and a six) then took the match away from the Warriors with a fifth wicket stand of 137 in 28 overs that enabled the Cobras to lead by 74 runs on the first innings.

The advantage should have been a great deal more but they lost their last six wickets, including both Kemp and Ontong, for 27 runs as Andrew Birch burst through with the second new ball to finish with 6/75 in 29 overs.

The Warriors reached 44/1 in their second innings before bad light stopped play and go into the third day with a deficit of 30 runs.

By contrast the other two matches were dominated by the side that batted first with both the Sunfoil Dolphins and the Nashua Titans taking healthy first innings leads in their respective matches against the Chevrolet Knights and the bizhub Highveld Lions.

Jacques Rudolph duly completed his double century at Senwes Park (210 off 294 balls, 32 balls) before being last man out in a total of 406 in 101.1 overs.

He was bowled by Pumelela Matshikwe who was the leading first innings bowler for the Lions for the second match in a row to finish with 5/102 in 23.1 overs. It was only his second five-wicket haul and the first time he had achieved this feat at franchise level.

The Lions lost wickets at regular intervals in their reply and were in deep trouble at 151/6. They were rescued by successive stands of 99 between Thami Tsolekile (58 off 106 balls, 8 fours) and Cliffie Deacon (62 off 73 balls, 9 fours) and 56 between Deacon and Dale Deeb.

By contrast their last two wickets fell without a run being added to the total. They nevertheless managed to restrict the Titans to a lead of exactly 100 runs.

Rudolph looked as prolific as ever at the start of the Titans’ second innings, racing to an unbeaten 30 off 23 balls (7 boundaries) by stumps at which stage his side held an overall lead of 131 runs with nine wickets in hand.

The Dolphins looked at one stage as though they might be in a position to enforce the follow on against the Knights at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. They took their overnight total to 339 and then had the Knights three down for only 10 runs against the new ball attack of Friedel de Wet and Kyle Abbott. Morne van Wyk was the only batsman to make much of a show (78 not out, 138 balls, 8 fours and a six) and he was largely responsible for restricting the Dolphins first innings lead to 135 runs.

Imran Tahir (3/88) was the most successful wicket-taker.

The Dolphins reached 16/0 by the close for an overall lead of 151 runs.
