Cobras spit venom in Paarl

Paarl - The victorious Cape Cobras moved off the foot-end of the SuperSport Series table thanks to their destructive frontline pacemen who floored the table-topping Warriors by nine wickets with a day to spare at Paarl on Saturday.

For the second time in this scheduled four-day clash, the Warriors' innings closed at 143 on a seaming pitch after Vernon Philander (4/40), Rory Kleinveldt (3/32) and Francois Plaatjies (3/27) shared the visitors' 10-wicket bounty in the second innings, in just under two sessions of Saturday's play.

With the Warriors slumping to 143 all out, the Cobras went out for their second innings with a relatively easy victory target of 47 runs.

They reached 47/1 two balls into the 17th over, which gave them their first SuperSport Series win of the season after five matches.

Over the first two days the Warriors scored 143 while the Cobras replied with 240, which gave the Capetonians a first innings lead of 97 runs.

There were signs the Warriors would overcome their poor start to the match when they returned to the clubhouse at stumps on Friday at 41/0.

However, four overs into Saturday's morning session their collapse was initiated by Kleinveldt who claimed two wickets in the space of five overs.

His new-ball partner Philander was equally destructive and repeated the feat ahead of the lunch break, which was taken with the Warriors on 105/4 - eight runs ahead.

All four wickets to fall in the morning session came via lbw decisions.

In 20 overs of post-lunch play the Warriors' demise hastened in spectacular fashion as they surrendered their remaining six wickets for the addition of only 38 runs and closed at 143 all out.

During this passage of play, Plaatjies helped himself to three sticks.

Both Philander (7/50 in 32 overs) and Plaatjies (7/48 in 29.1 overs) picked up seven wickets and shared the Man-of-the-Match award.

Next week the Cobras, who chalked up 16.8 points against four by the Warriors in the match, will move to more placid surroundings at Newlands where they will host the Eagles.
