Cape Town - Fifteen wickets fell on the first day as the Cape Cobras took a firm grip on their SuperSport Series match against the Titans at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Thursday.
The Cobras won the toss and bowled the Titans out in no more than 44 overs for 112 runs. The only partnership of any substance was the 73 for the third wicket between Farhaan Behardien (45 off 74 balls with seven fours) and Henry Davids (29 off 97 balls). The Titans never recovered after Jacques Rudolph wasdismissed cheaply for the first time this season.
Not surprisingly, the Cobras only needed to use their four frontline seamers with Rory Kleinveldt (5/26) being the pick of the bunch.
In reply the Cobras took control with a partnership of 80 for the second wicket between Andrew Puttick (41 off 58 balls, 6 fours) and Stiaan van Zyl (66 off 74 balls, 10 fours).
By the close the Cobras had established a lead of 61 runs with five wickets in hand although their two form batsmen, Van Zyl and Justin Ontong, are both back in the pavilion.
The Knights won the toss against the Warriors at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley and were given an excellent platform by Reeza Hendricks (96 off 160 balls, 18 fours) and Boeta Dippenaar (84 off 203 balls, 14 fours) who shared a partnership of 157 for the second wicket.
Although neither player was able to reach his century they both achieved personal career landmarks – Dippenaar passing 12 000 first-class runs and Hendricks 3 000.
The rest of the top and middle-order failed to build on this foundation but the Knights still placed a substantial total 3-7/8 on the board by the close of play.
The other partnership of note came from Michael Erlank and Johan van der Wath who put on 60 for the eighth wicket.
Rusty Theron (3/55 in 25 overs) was the most successful bowler.
