Paarl - The Nashua Cape Cobras took a stranglehold on proceedings as they dismissed the Chevrolet Warriors for 143 before reaching 51 for one at stumps on the first day of their SuperSport Series match at Boland Bank Park in Paarl on Thursday.
The Warriors won the toss and elected to bat but the visitor’s first innings was ended just eight overs after the tea break thanks to career best figures of four for 21 off 15.1 overs from fast bowler Francois Plaatjies.
The Eastern Cape franchise did enjoy one moment of success with the ball when fast bowler Makhaya Ntini trapped the in-form Andrew Puttick (ten) leg-before.
But Alistair Grey (18 not out) and Stiaan van Zyl (18 not out) ensured that the home side would begin day two of the match trailing the visitors by just 92 runs on the first innings.
The day did not begin well for the Warriors as seamer Vernon Philander tore through their top order.
Opening bowler Philander claimed three wickets with the new ball as the Warriors slumped to nine for four.
Philander sent down an opening spell of three for five off seven overs to derail the visitors, who began the day as the SuperSport Series log leaders.
Seamer Rory Kleinveldt instigated the collapse when he bowled Michael Smith (nought) in the first over of the match.
Philander then took centre stage as he picked up the wickets of Jon-Jon Smuts (one), Ashwell Prince (four) and Colin Ingram (nought) as the Warriors limped to 67 for four at lunch.
Arno Jacobs and Craig Thyssen (38) defied the home team’s bowlers with a fifth-wicket stand of 98 that used up 42 overs before Thyssen became Plaatjies’ first wicket of the innings when he offered up a catch to keeper Ryan Canning.
Thyssen’s dismissal heralded another collapse from the Warriors as they lost three wickets for 11 runs to stumble to 118 for seven.
Plaatjies trapped Athenkosi Dyili (two) lbw before left-arm spinner Robin Peterson accounted for Lyall Meyer (two) in the same fashion.
Jacobs brought up his 34th first-class fifty off 153 deliveries before being bowled by Plaatjies for a patient 68 off 211 balls.
Plaatjies and Peterson then snared a wicket each to end the Warriors’ resistance with Peterson ending the innings with two for 62 while Philander picked up three for 10 off 13 overs.
