Cobras, Lions finely poised

Johannesburg - Thanks in no small measure to an eighth-wicket partnership of 79 between Robin Peterson and Vernon Philander, SuperSport Series title aspirants the Cape Cobras did well to muster 296 in their first innings on day two of their match against the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers on Thursday.

Stephen Cook and Alviro Petersen set about reducing the Cobras' 94 run lead in a workmanlike fashion to take the Lions to stumps on 82 without loss in their second innings, with Cook and Petersen on 31 and 49 respectively.

Earlier, the Cobras resumed on their overnight score of 69 for one with Andrew Puttick on 34 and Stiaan van Zyl on 11.

Robbie Frylinck made the initial breakthrough, inducing Van Zyl to go fishing outside his off-stump only for the batsman to edge the delivery to wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile.

Puttick's innings was particularly tortured, scratching around for eight runs off 42 deliveries, quite in contrast to his innings of the previous day.

But just as Puttick was looking to break free from the shackles, he misread a Frylinck in-swinger, and was bowled neck-and-crop.

Richard Levi and Justin Kemp followed in quick succession and the men from the Cape had lost four wickets for 39 runs.

Immediately after lunch Justin Ontong and Ryan Canning had retraced their steps back to the dressing room, and it was all going pear-shaped.

However, Peterson and Philander shored up the innings with their much needed partnership, which enabled the visitors to post a first-innings lead.

Philander was eventually out caught by Cliffe Deacon at second slip off Frylinck, and Peterson, who passed 50 - his 11th SuperSport Series half-century - with a beautifully struck boundary through the covers, followed 23 runs later for 75.

Peterson's two-hour, 61-ball sojourn at the wicket contained 13 boundaries and one maximum struck off Monty Panesar over cow-corner.

Frylinck, with five for 78 - his first SuperSport Series five-wicket haul - was the destroyer-in-chief and Deacon weighed in with four for 65.
